The Godhead

The Word Of God - Lesson II A

The Godhead

Having learned that God values His Word greatly we now need to ask ourselves the question:

Why does God value His Word greatly?

The answer is: Because His Word reveals:

1. Who God is

2. Who angels are

3. Who humanity is

Who God is

We learn in God’s Word that there is one God who exists in three Persons:

God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. They are distinct Persons, with each one having a specific function, yet they are all one God. They are in absolute perfect harmony, consisting of one substance. They are co-eternal, co-equal and co-powerful. If any of the three were removed there would be no God. Each is divine, yet there are not three gods, but one God. Each is all-knowing. God’s eternal nature is described in:

Genesis 21:33

Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the Name of the Lord, the eternal God.

Deuteronomy 33:27

The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms…

Isaiah 40:28

Do you not know? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no-one can fathom.

God’s power is described in:

Genesis 17:1

When Abraham was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty…”

Psalm 89:8

O Lord God Almighty, who is like You? You are mighty, O Lord and Your faithfulness surrounds You.

Jeremiah 10: 12

But God made the earth by His power….

Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

Revelation 19:1

After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting: Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God.

Revelation 19:6

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.

God’s divine nature is described in:

Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made so that men are without excuse.

This is then how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name…”

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

John 5:21-23

For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom He is pleased to give it. Moreover the Father judges no-one but has entrusted all judgement to the Son, that all may honour the Son just as they honour the Father. He who does not honour the Son does not honour the Father, who sent Him.

John 5:26

For as the Father has life within Himself so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself.”

John 10:30

I (Jesus, the Son of God) and the Father are One.

Philippians 2:11

And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

I John 2:22-24

Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist he denies the Father and the Son. No-one who denies the Son has the Father, whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also. See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.

Some Bible verses which specifically mention God the Son are

Matthew 11:27

All things have been committed to Me by My Father. No-one knows the Son except the Father, and no-one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

Matthew 28:18-19

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

John 3:35-36

The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in His hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on Him.

John 5:25-26

I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself.

John 6:40

For My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

I John 2:22-24

Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist – he denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also. See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.

I John 5:12

He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Some Bible verses which specifically mention God the Holy Spirit are:

Genesis 1:2

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Matthew 1:18

“This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 28:18-19

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

John 3:5-8

“Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no-one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at My saying, “You should be born again.” The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

John 14:26

But the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 16:13-15

But when He, the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to Me (Jesus Christ) by taking from what is Mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is Mine and make it known to you.

Acts 1:5

For John baptised with water but in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

From these verses we learn that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are all part of the Godhead, the Trinity, and though they are in complete unity on everything, they have their own distinct function within the Trinity.
